Field Roast Products Update

I was very pleased to introduce this very excellent product to the Edmonton vegan/vegetarian consumer but it looks like I can’t get more product for some time (I haven’t been able to get new stock for a couple of months so far).

I am going to visit this supplier when I am down in Vancouver in April for a trade show and will try to arrange something that will work for all of us.

Many people really enjoyed these products and I would really like to get them back into the store.

Happy Spring 2011

Today is the first day of spring.

I am feeling bouyed that spring will bring a paradigm shift for more people and our society. We need a shift to happen for a healthier future.

Yesterday I was in the parking lot talking with a customer and I noticed the moon rising on the eastern horizon. I remarked how large and bright it was. I was unaware that there was something special happening with the moon this weekend. It will be closer to our planet this weekend than it has been for 20 years. Try to make time to take in the celestial display this evening  and celebrate the arrival of SPRING!

Price Comparison for Planet Organic and Earth's General Store

The other week I was in Safeway and decided to gather pricing for the organic items they carried and then I compared it to the prices in Earth’s General Store. You can see this blog here.

Many people have remarked about our lower prices (especially bulk) when compared to Planet Organic so earlier this week (I have not been to their store since last fall) I went and spent some time (an hour or so) walking around their store and recording prices.

Anyway. I wrote down quite an extensive list and I produced a spreadsheet of their prices as of Tuesday, March 15th, 2011. I just finished entering in our prices.

As with the Safeway price comparison we certainly have the best prices on organic herbs and spices, coffee (Fair Trade Certified and Certified Organic – and our coffee is roasted fresh right here at our store), and bulk grains and beans.

Price Comparison on Over 50 Products from Safeway - Earth's General Store Compares VERY Favourably

My son Timothy is now 16 and a half years old and I suspect he will be wanting to move into his own place in a few years or so. To give him some idea of the costs of living on your own and to prepare him we created a list of products that he figured that he would use during a normal week. This list included toilet paper, dish washing liquid, fresh fruit, pasta, breakfast cereal, cheese, bread, peanut butter, pasta sauce, etc. He did not include any meat in his list nor did he add it when we were at the store.

Last Wednesday evening we went over to Safeway at Bonnie Doon to do a store tour and to price out his list. We did product comparisons of by unit weight or volume to see whether he was getting value for his money.

I choose Safeway since it was close to our home and he and his friends would likely use it when they are purchasing their food when they have their own place. I would hope that he would choose to support the farmer’s market and organic stores but that will be his choice when he comes to that point.

In support of the Israel Apartheid Week (March 14th – 19th) Earth's General Store will be donating $5 for every bottle of Zatoun Olive Oil to the local Palestine Solidarity Network.

So come on down to the store, purchase a bottle of this very good olive oil and help support this group and, my wish, a peaceful resolution to this situation.

New Products for this Weekend - Food Dehydrators, Coconut Milk, Organic Garden Seeds, AND MORE!

Last year we brought in the So Delicious Coconut Milk but then the Canadian Food Inspection Agency decided they did not like this company (the same people that make theSo Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage - Original Tofurky products) using the term ‘milk’ when it was not a dairy product. They instructed the company to stop distributing the product in Canada until they have reviewed things. Well I guess they decided in favour of So Delicious  since we just got a shipment in today and it still has the word ‘milk’ on the carton. I only received 1 case of each flavour so I suspect we will be sold out of them by the end of the weekend. There will be lots for next weekend.
