We order the worms on Wednesday and they are delivered to the store on Friday. People that are interested in getting worms need to place an order before Wednesday so that they can ensure that worms are reserved for them. People should pick their worms up at the store over the next few days (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). The worms are sold in 1/2 pound lots (this is 1/2 pound of worms in a small bag of soil) and are sold for $45.00. A kit consists of a 53L Rubbermaid Roughtote with holes drilled out of the lid (for ventilation), 1/2 pound bag of worms, 50 litres of soil, a trowel and a marker. The kit is sold for $75.00. We offer the bins and soil separately so you can purchase components as you need them. Please contact us at 780-439-8725 to order the worms and/or worm composting kit.

Our supplier has stopped supplying the Harsch Fermentation Crocks. I have sourced some Polish crocks and an updated price list and information can be found at this blog post.
To add another dimension of healthy food preparation (adding to our dehydration, sprouting, and raw food offering) Earth’s General Store has added Harsch ceramic fermentation crocks. These are recognized as the premiere fermentation crocks.
We carry the 5 litre, 7.5 litre, and 10 litre crocks. We also brought in some hardwood wooden tampers and mandolins that are sized to shred cabbage.
The prices are:
Today the media has endorsed that Chia as a superfood. The people involved in plant based health have known for many years that chia seeds have been a great source of omega-3 oils, protein, and fibre. They are not just for those ‘chia pet’ anymore but to help people control their appetite and cholesterol.
Earth’s General Store carries chia in bulk and packages (of course the bulk seeds are at a very good price compared to packaged prices). All of our chia seeds are certified organically grown.
Chia seeds can easily be added to your usual meals and/or incorporated in a green smoothie. There is a very nice chia pudding that you can make. My recipe uses a little more almond milk and is not as thick looking as the picture on the linked website.

It seems we expand the raw food section by leaps rather than small steps.
Today we added:
We now have back in stock:
We still have lots of Kelp Noodles – they seem to get more popular every week. It helps that places like Noorish serves them up and will shortly have them on their menu. These will only get more and more popular for people looking for healthier past like products.

There have been several stories in the media about organic produce having pesticide residual on them. A lot of time they don’t mention that this is not being cause on purpose but by the general poisoning of our environment by the chemical based agricultural system. Also the residual amount is less than 10% of what is found on conventional. I will take that reduction.
Some people that choose organic don’t only do it for their own well being but that they do not wish to see the planet being exposed to more toxic load than what it is presently trying to deal with. It also reduces the amount of pesticides that work in the field are exposed to. I like that!
The Certified Organic process has many protocols. If a product does not follow the protocol they cannot be considered organic.
Can’t figure out what that eco person on your Christmas list would like as a gift? You are not alone. Many people turn to gift cards for those hard to buy for people and Earth’s General Store is here to help buy for a certain segment of our society.
We have products and food for the vegan, vegetarian, gluten free/celiac, book worm, new parents/new baby, eco conscious, lactose intolerant, cruelty free, raw foodists, juicers, health conscious, whole fooders, etc on your list.
So if you are unsure what to choose for your friends perhaps a gift card would help.

Since Earth’s General Store evolution into organic food store we have focussed on several different aspects that are important to us: vegan/vegetarian lifestyle and foods; bulk foods; gluten free foods; lots of books to inform us how to lead a healthier and balanced life;
We have offered probably the largest variety of sprouting supplies in the province for the past year. All of our sprouting seeds are certified organic and sprouting grade. Our two main suppliers of the seeds are Mumm’s and Sproutmaster.
Oils for Health - Hemp, Flax, Sesame, Coconut, Canola, Sunflower, Safflower, Walnut, Olive and Omega Oil Blends
Our bodies need oils (and fats) for a variety of body functions. Unfortunately our industrialized food system add inferior oils and fats into the manufactured foods they provide and we end up consuming more oils and fats than we require and typically processed food contain some of the worse foods for our body – transfats for example.
The majority of the oils that we stock at Earth’s General Store are certified organic – except for a few exception (we cannot get certified organic versions of walnut oil and toasted sesame oil, and peanut oil).
Well another first. Several months ago Earth’s General Store started to offer a limited variety of essential oils in bulk. I figured this would reduce the price for people AND eliminate all those pretty but small bottles – like 7.4mL, 10mL and 15mL.
I was right about the price savings. Though the price on our decanting bottles looks kind of scary ($399.00 per kilogram for certified organic Lavender essential oil) when it is put into a 10mL bottle the price works out to about $4.00. Elsewhere in the store we offer organic essentials oils in small bottles from a couple of suppliers. To give you an idea about the saving that you would make if you refilled your own bottle a bottle of one of our brands of bottled lavender would cost you $12.45 for 7.4mL. Most people feel this is a good price. This works out to over $1,680 per kilogram. So if you refilled this same bottle when it became empty you would be charged about $2.95.
Do you want to save 75% on your purchase?
Many people ask me at the store about Miso. Though I have only been using miso for about 15 years I am certainly not an expert on it. I sometimes use it in stews, soups, pasta sauce (I use a Gado-Gado peanut butter concoction), rice bowls, and sometimes in stir fries.
When the store evolved to include food I of course added miso as one of the products in the limited cooler space. I consider miso a healthy food product. Miso is a fermented product and is recognized as a healthy product for our bodies since it introduces flora to our lower intestinal tract.
Miso is based on fermented soybeans but then other grains are added and this develops more complex flavours. This fermentation is due to the introduction of a starter culture called koji.
There are several misos but they are considered either sweet or dark.
Sweet miso is lighter in colour and milder in flavour. It has been aged for a lesser period of time (the longer a miso is aged the stronger the flavour becomes).
Dark miso is aged more than 2 years. It is higher in protein, stronger in flavour, and has a higher salt content.
A word of caution is needed in reference to miso and it’s salt content. It can be high! The darker misos have higher salt content than the sweeter misos.
