Every year we need to do a physical count of the store to provide a snapshot of the store. Our year end is May 31st and this year we will be closing on Wednesday, May 29th so that staff can do a count of our inventory.

We are an independent and locally owned community grocery store with a wide selection of certified organic and certified fairly traded choices, offering the community information and products that support good health and reduce our ecological impact on the planet.

We are currently looking for Part-Time Floor Staff (15-25 hours/week)

Start Date: June 3

Floor staff provide customer service and maintain a clean and organized store environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide cashier service.

• Process customer bulk refill requests to ensure a smooth flow of customer service.

• Maintain good organization and display of products.

• Provide customer service in a specialized environment.

• Clean floors, bathrooms and other areas of the store.

• Engage in continuous learning in response to the increasing variety of products and development of the store.

For almost 20 years Earth’s General Store has been a ticket outlet for North Country Fair tickets. 2013 will be no different from those other years.

We received our North Country Fair tickets last week so if you are looking of a weekend of fun and mighty fine music then come and purchase your advanced tickets.

NCF will be running from June 21st to June 23rd, 2013.

Many years ago tobacco companies denied that their product was a cause of many illnesses and were not addictive. This denial tactic was used as a delaying tactic so that they continue racking in the huge profits that their industry provided them and their shareholders. Besides denying the connection between tobacco and illnesses these corporations also brought expert witnesses to the debate confused the issue for the average citizen. These tobacco companies were smart and diversified their holding with the huge profits they made from the tobacco portion of their corporation.  Kind of like a mob boss buying a legitimate business to launder their other ill gotten gains and look somewhat respectable.

Last year we placed well in two categories and this year – we tied for first place for Best Grocery Market in Edmonton. Thank you. It is quite the honour.

After 37 years Java Jive Coffee closed down. They were a pioneer in the early days of local coffee roasting providing excellent roasts. They not only roasted the coffee but also offered retail outlets which were very popular.

Sad to see them leave after so long but I can appreciate the amount of time and energy that the owner has put into his business over the years and he wants to spend more time with his family and pursue other paths. He is looking at selling the business (land, equipment and business) so if you are looking at a career change this might be an option for you :).

Quite a few people don’t realize that Earth’s General Store has been roasting coffee at our store since 2006. We have quite a following of people that think our coffee is excellent. I think that what makes the coffee from small independent coffee roasters is that we roast in small batches, the coffee is always fresh, and you are only one person away from talking with the roastmaster. Just like talking to the person at the Farmer’s Market who provides you with homemade perogies we provide people with fresh coffee beans.

Besides fresh coffee beans available from Earth’s General Store there are other local coffee roasters:

Fair Trade is important to the founding philosophy of Earth's General Store. Many people tend to only focus on the environmental side of their food but it was a person that planted, cared for and then picked and packaged the product. I believe these people should be paid an equitable amount for their labour. I think this is fair.

Fair Trade Canada has selected the first two weeks in May as Fair Trade Fortnight and this year Earth’s General Store is having a special day participate in this recognition of the Fair Trade movement.

When Earth’s General Store opened in 1991 we included cloth diapers as one of the major product lines we offered to the citizens of Edmonton. Over the year there have been several other companies in Edmonton that started to offer cloth diapers as well as the rise in popularity of ordering such items through the internet.

Earth’s General Store has evolved its product line over the year and diapers have always been a part of this evolution but we have decided that we could use the space that diapers presently inhabit for other products. So to encourage people to purchase these items we are going to have a diaper clearance sale.

Starting May 2nd all diapers will be 30% off (this discount will likely make them the lowest price in Canada). This discount will be good for all the cloth diapers, covers, wraps, training pants, liners, swimming pants, feeding bottles (plastic and glass), nipples, teething rings, baby outfits, diaper bags, diaper pails, diaper pail filters/deodorizers, diaper safety pins, Snappi diaper fasteners, swim/pool pants/wraps, and a few other baby accessories.

The truck finally arrived on May 9th so it looks like it will be Fertilizer Thursday and Friday (May 9th and 10th). No GMO Alfalfa just organic Alfalfa.

Many of our customers grow gardens. Good healthy soils are the basis of healthy plants and food. Compost is one of the best soil additives about but sometimes we feel we need to add a little bit more food for our plants – we add fertilizers. Most of the fertilizers out there are produced using natural gas (yes the same stuff you use to heat your home) via the Haber–Bosch process.
