We order the worms on Wednesday and they are delivered to the store on Friday. People that are interested in getting worms need to place an order before Wednesday so that they can ensure that worms are reserved for them. People should pick their worms up at the store over the next few days (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). The worms are sold in 1/2 pound lots (this is 1/2 pound of worms in a small bag of soil) and are sold for $45.00. A kit consists of a 53L Rubbermaid Roughtote with holes drilled out of the lid (for ventilation), 1/2 pound bag of worms, 50 litres of soil, a trowel and a marker. The kit is sold for $75.00. We offer the bins and soil separately so you can purchase components as you need them. Please contact us at 780-439-8725 to order the worms and/or worm composting kit.
Fall is the Season for Preserving! Harsch Sauerkraut Lactic Fermentation Crocks and Dehydrators at Earth's General Store
Our supplier has stopped supplying the Harsch Fermentation Crocks. I have sourced some Polish crocks and an updated price list and information can be found at this blog post.
The leaves are turning and the gardens are cleaned of their bounties. Now the work begins to preserve the bounty of your work (or picking up a load at the local farmer’s market and/or from Earth’s General Store).
Many more people are looking at storing beyond freezing and canning. They are seeking out ways to pickle produce in a healthier way than with vinegar or extending the life of food. Fermentation and dehydration are two excellent forms of food preservation that is experiencing a great resurgence.
Earth’s General Store is the local supply leader for Harsch Fermentation Crocks and Excalibur Dehydrators.
Harsch ceramic fermentation crocks are recognized as the premiere fermentation crocks. We carry the 5 litre, 7.5 litre, 10 litre and 15 litre crocks. We also brought in some hardwood wooden tampers and mandolins that are sized to shred cabbage.
The prices are: See the blog post @ http://egs.ca/node/601 for updated prices from the new manufacturer.
These crocks should last a lifetime since they are well made in Germany. The ceramic glaze is lead-free. One of the great features of the Harsch type crock is that it has a lid that sits in a lip which is filled with water. This creates a water trap so that nasty air-borne germs, yeast, etc don’t find their way into your fermenting product. In addition this company has added a ceramic weight that comes in two halves that is placed onto of the fermenting material to help press out the materials water and to keep it submerged.
Come and check out these wonderful new products. They are beautiful!
Dehydration is gaining great popularity. This is happening on two fronts – the preservation front and the raw food movement. Earth’s General Store has been offering the Excalibur dehydrators for almost two years now and the demand only get stronger.
We offer the full line of Excalibutor dehydrators – 4, 5, and 9 shelf models.
Recently Excalibur allowed retailer in the USA and Canada, like Earth’s General Store, to resell their models with timers (we can only get these in white).
We try to have the whole spectrum of models in stock but being the small store we are we never achieve this – except for the brief time when we get a shipment in. It always seems to happen that one time people really like one model over another and we invariably run our of certain models sooner than others.
We presently have a good offering of models and we will have another large in a couple of weeks.
