Banana Price Increase - First Increase in 5 years

After 5 years of not changing our price for our Certified Organic and Fair trade certified bananas we will be increasing our prices this coming Wednesday.

We had the banana price at 95 and 99 cents for a very long time. Recently our banana supplier has had to increase their price so now we are going to increase ours to $1.25 per pound

Here is a story from the Discovery Organics Website about the coop (Cerro Azul) that supplies their bananas and eventually end up in your househols.

I genuinely appreciate that people choose to supprt Fair Trade and organic principals, how their food is produced, and how the workers are treated.

So if you want to save a bit on your banana purchase - do it before Wednesday :)

Employment Opportunity - Produce Manager

Be Part of Something Good, Come and Work with Earth’s General Store

We are an independent and locally owned community grocery store with a wide selection of Fair Trade Certified and Certified Organic items. We offer the community information and products that support good health and reduce our individual and collective ecological impact on the planet.

If you are interested in being part of a healthy and positive work environment where you can connect with good people doing good actions with a strong emphasis on community values then consider coming to work with us at Edmonton's greener grocer.

We are currently looking for a Full-Time Produce Manager (WHYTE Avenue)

New Book Titles - Smoothies, Juicing, Cleansing and Vegan

Just got a great shipment of new book titles into the store.

Green Coffee Beans for Home Roasting

All of us are familiar with the brown roasted coffee bean. You can buy these in just about every store in Edmonton. You can find the coffee bean liquid end product in even a wider assortment of establishment – from our excellent locally owned coffee shops like Credo, Transcend, Inconclast, De Capo, etc to their multinational counterparts like Starbucks and Second Cup, at every restaurant (fast food to high end), in every office, free sometimes in your bank... well just about everywhere.

You can even find some Fair Trade and/or Certified Organic coffee at some of these places but as far as I know Earth's General Store is the only business that offers exclusively Fair Trade, certified organic coffee roasted right here in Edmonton (at our Whyte Avenue store) by us. All of these aspects are important to me: respect for the producers/growers, respect for the land, air, and water, and a local value added product while offering excellent flavour and taste.

MacEwan Marketing Students Helping out with a Strategy

A few months ago we asked people to fill out a survey to help us determine what might be some of the barriers for people to use our downtown store as part of their grocery purchases. The response was quite overwhelming (almost 100 people responded). This is taking me a very long time to digest.

Fortunately one of our customers offered to help to organise the information (thank you Ellen). Ellen was also instrumental about connecting me with a marketing professor (Fernado) at MacEwan University. Ellen and I met with the professor and he invited us to make a presentation to his class to see if they would like to take on our store as a class project.

The response from his class and another marketing class was quite flattering. Five different marketing groups from the classes are now working with our store to come up with some solutions.

We will not see anything tangible for a little while yet but I will keep you up to date on how it is going. We need to solve this problem so that we can continue to service the communities that each of our stores are part of.

Family Day Holiday Hours

Tomorrow is Family Day in Alberta. I hope you have a good and pleasant day.

Earth's General Store will be open for limited hours this holiday Monday (February 16th, 2015). The hours at both stores will be from 12:00 (noon) to 6:00pm.

Have a great long weekend. You deserve it!

Epsom Salt – Soaks Muscle Aches Away

We all get muscle aches. Sometimes it comes from overexertion such as participating in the Birkebeiner or Silver Skate this weekend, sleeping in a disagreeable position or but it always seems to come with aging.

A solution to reducing this soreness is to have hot soaks in tubs such as hot tubs, whirlpools, etc. Many of us don't have these in our houses but we can get take a hot bath to help soften up and relax our muscles. To increase the benefit of a hot bath all you have to do is add Epson Salts (magnesium sulphate) to your bath water.

Adding Epsom Salts to your bath water allows the body to absorb the magnesium into your body and to relax muscles. To have a relaxing and sedative bath/soak add two cups of Epsom Salts to your bath water.

Other uses of Epsom Salts are:

Truffula Raw Vegan Gluten-Free and Extremely Delicious Pop-Up Lunch

Allison Landin of Truffula will be hosting a pop-up lunch at Earth's General Store's Organic Cafe in our downtown location (10150-104th Street).

"Watch for raw and vegan products such as Landin’s truly delicious Pickled Fig Pizza, with macadamia pesto, sprouted buckwheat crust, and oyster mushrooms, and her chèvre truffles, which have the consistency and flavour depth of goat cheese even though they are made with nut paste." From Liane Faulder's Edmonton Journal Food Notes February 11, 2015

You can check out the Facebook event page including the menu which looks quite fantastic.

I believe this is the first time that a raw menu is being offered in the downtown core.

We are really stoked for people to try this extremely tasty and healthy food. Be prepared to have your body truly enjoy so excellent food.

Winter Bike to Work Day – February 13th, 2015

Edmonton is a northern city. It is cold and quite often unpleasant during the winter months but for the most part our winter weather can be decent enough to ride a bicycle quite comfortably.

As with most North American cities Edmonton has a car centric mindset when it comes to how we move, how we plan our cities, where we allocate our tax money for infrastructure, and that we need to hibernate.

There is a shift happening. More people are cycling in the summer months and a good portion of those people use their bicycles during the winter months.

A group of people have started a movement to celebrate bicycle commuting in the winter. They have created Winter Bike to Work Day and this year the day is Friday, February 13th. All you have to do is register on their website to let the world know that Edmonton Bicycles in the Winter. Register your ride and shift our city to a greener present and future.

Winter Bike to Work Day FREE Breakfast

Whew! 2015 is starting off with lots of events.

Most people know that we at Earth's General Store love organic, community, and cycling.

So when we get the idea to combine all of these things we love - well what could be finer. During Edmonton Bike Month (June) we host a bike to work pancake breakfast and thought - why not a winter one to coincide with the International Winter Bike to Work Day!

SO on February 13th we will be participating in the International Winter Bike to Work Day by hosting a FREE Pancake breakfast

The breakfast will include blueberry pancakes (flour mix provided by Gold Forest Grains - local organic grain grower), Fair Trade coffee and tea (the coffee is roasted fresh at our south side store), organic maple syrup, organic butter or vegan alternatives and lots of chatting with fellow Edmonton cyclists.

Hot pancakes and coffee should be ready to be consumed by 7am on Friday, February 13. This is taking place at our downtown Organic Cafe (Earth's General Store, 10150 - 104th Street).
