We order the worms on Wednesday and they are delivered to the store on Friday. People that are interested in getting worms need to place an order before Wednesday so that they can ensure that worms are reserved for them. People should pick their worms up at the store over the next few days (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). The worms are sold in 1/2 pound lots (this is 1/2 pound of worms in a small bag of soil) and are sold for $45.00. A kit consists of a 53L Rubbermaid Roughtote with holes drilled out of the lid (for ventilation), 1/2 pound bag of worms, 50 litres of soil, a trowel and a marker. The kit is sold for $75.00. We offer the bins and soil separately so you can purchase components as you need them. Please contact us at 780-439-8725 to order the worms and/or worm composting kit.
At Earth's General Store we offer visitors information and products that will help them reduce their ecological and social impact on the planet and all inhabitants. We are a distributor of information and knowledge, encouraging people to consume less, consume wisely, consume locally, consume fairly and love lots more! We do this by offering items that have beneficial advantages - local, certified organic, Fair Trade Certified, in bulk (less packaging), water and energy efficiency products, information, and support to act! We are attempting to offer a way of life that is balanced and respectful of the planet and all its creatures. I know this sounds a little wishy washy but I believe that is our ultimate goal in life - do as little harm as possible and leave the world better than when we arrived. One of the intimate ways that we interact with the environment is through the food we eat. We have the power to choose food that has less impact on the environment, society and other beings. We can eat less meat, choose food that is grown locally and organically and to buy in bulk. In February 2010 Earth’s General Store moved and expand our inventory to include food products. We now offer fresh, packaged, chilled and frozen organic products. We are a real Health Food Store - offering healthy food for your body, your spirit and the planet. We continue to carry the products that we have offered the citizens of Edmonton since 1991 like worms for composting, cloth diapers for the green parents, animal free personal care products, and reusable menstrual products. We have the most experience of any store or organization in Edmonton on green lifestyle. If you want to help make the world a better place Earth’s General Store may be of great assistance to help you along the path.
The other day there was an article in the Edmonton Journal “Shop Local First aims to keep retail dollars at home” and I read some of the reviews and thought I should add my comments. I wrote to the author, Bill Mah, and he suggested that it be forwarded to the Letters Editor for consideration. I was hesitant at first since I had not written it for ‘publication’ and not everything was well expressed but I said fine since I was stressed with my work load.
The other day someone came into the store and said how much they enjoyed my letter to the Edmonton Journal.
Earth’s General Store is becoming part of the fabric of the neighbourhoods of Ritchie and Mill Creek. People are using the store as their community convenience store where they purchase healthy bread, milk, eggs, fresh vegetables, pick up a community league newsletter, and many other daily products (all organic of course).
This feels good.
But people come from further afield because they value what we do. We are a neighbourhood community store but we also belong to a larger community – the environmental community, the peace and social justice community, the greener parenting community, the food security community, the bicycle commuting community, the smart growth community, the vegan/vegetarian community, the permaculture/organic gardening/pesticide reduction community, the gay/lesbian/LBGT community, and many other dimensions. We do this because this is who we are.
We are a neighbourhood community store PLUS! A local independent community focused store that offers the household basics and so much more.

After much research and discussion with a few of our customers and suppliers Earth’s General Store offers Raw Certified Organic Almonds from Italy or Spain.
When we started carrying bulk almonds I asked our supplier for Raw Certified Organic Almonds and this is what they said they supplied to us. After a little further research with our supplier I found out that these were from California. I knew that Almonds from California could not be considered raw since they had to go through a sterilization process (Organic Almonds normally get sterilized through a steam process). I do not consider these to be raw if they go through this sterilization process.
So I started to look for real RAW Certified Organic Almonds and was able to find a supply of Raw organic almonds from Italy from one of my suppliers. In 2013 our supply of Italian almonds was interrupted and we sourced some from Spain which our customers said were delicious.
Why do I promote organic almonds? Years ago I watched a documentary on food and one of the scenes showed the spraying of a neurotoxin onto an almond orchard. I decided right then that I did not wish to be part of a system that used such a toxic product so I started to use only organic almonds in my home.
So you have decided to be a Vegetarian or Vegan! There are lots of reasons why people make this choice – environmental, consciousness, ethical, humanitarian, respect, health, weight loss – really there are so many reasons to choose this change in lifestyle.
It is quite easy eating vegetarian and a little more difficult to live a life as a vegan. It is important that you understand that you eat properly so that you have a diet that fulfils you and your dietary choice but is also healthy. Potato chips are vegan but they are not healthy to be regular part of a diet.
Looking for a store that aligns to your lifestyle choice? Earth’s General Store only stocks vegetarian and vegan grocery items. We don’t knowingly stock any dead animal food products in the store.
Does this sound like a store that you want to support?
Almost all the staff of Earth’s General Store are either vegetarian or vegan. We live this life. I have been a vegetarian since 1989 and have been involved in the Vegetarians of Alberta for almost 20 years.
To compliment our offering of products for people that have food and ingredient allergies and sensitivities (gluten free/wheat free items for people with Celiac Disease), lactose free cheese and dairy products (Daiya cheese, soy milk/rice milk and next week So Delicious Coconut Milk beverage), and Organic Soy Nut Butter we are adding NoNuts Golden Peabutter spread.
This Peabutter is Nut Free, Cholesterol Free and Gluten Free (and it looks like all the little rabbits are very happy on the label – : ))

So many people tell me that they love our coffee. I believe they try it because they know that it is Fair Trade Certified and Certified Organic (this is the ONLY type of coffee we use). They are surprised to hear that we roast our coffee fresh right at the store in Edmonton.
Some of the coffee we get is also produced with Cafe Femenino certification.
Since all the coffee is Certified Organic it is also Shade Grown. The coffee plant evolved as an understory plant – it grows in the shade of the tall rain forest trees. When the natural vegetation is preserved it continues to be home to all the fantastic biodiversity that lives there – the birds, the insects, and all the other animals and plants. Organic production methods and certification ensures that toxic synthetic chemicals are not put into the environment and destroying habitat, killing birds and insects and affecting the health of workers.
