Privacy Policy
Last updated 9 October 2026
This page explains what Empire of Golden Sails keeps about
you, why, who else can see it, and how to have it changed or removed. We
keep as little as the game needs. We don't sell your information, we don't
show ads, and we don't use tracking or analytics services.
The game is run from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. We are responsible for your information
under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents
Act (PIPEDA). For any privacy question, write to
brandom.designer@gmail.com.
1. What we collect
What you give us
| What | Who can see it |
| Email address, entered when you sign up |
Only us. Never shown to other players. |
| Captain name, and any pirate name, phrase, crew
name, flag or crest you choose |
Everyone who plays. These are how other captains know you. |
| Chat messages you send |
The players in that chat (everyone, or your crew). |
| Messages to us, for example a support or
deletion request |
Only us. |
We do not ask for a password, your real name, your
date of birth, your address, your phone number or your location.
What the game records as you play
- Game progress: level, ships, guns, upgrades,
currencies, points, race and battle results, crew membership, and
leaderboard placings. Your captain's name, level, ship and results
appear on leaderboards, seat charts and race fields that other players
see.
- Activity: when you first joined, when you were last
seen, how many visits and races you've had, and roughly how long you've
played.
- Purchase records: what you bought, when, what it cost
and whether it was delivered. Your card details go to the payment
processor, never to us.
- Technical: the IP address you last
connected from (each visit replaces the previous one), and a one-word
device type worked out from your browser, such as “iPhone” or
“Windows”. We don't build a device fingerprint.
What stays on your device
The game saves things in your browser's local storage, not in cookies.
We use no cookies. On your device it keeps:
- your saved game and the sign-in key that connects this browser to
your captain;
- recent chat, so it's there when you come back;
- preferences such as music on or off and fullscreen.
You can clear these by clearing site data for egs.ca in your browser.
Your captain on our server isn't deleted when you do this. See section 6
for that.
2. Why we use it
- To run the game: your account, your progress, races,
Royales, Versus matches, crews, chat and leaderboards.
- To deliver what you buy, and to keep the records the
law and our payment processor require.
- To keep it fair and safe: spotting cheating, the same
person running many accounts (this is what the IP address is mainly used
for), abuse in chat and payment fraud.
- To help you when you contact us, and to tell you
about important changes to the game, these terms or your account. We
don't send marketing email unless you have separately agreed to it.
- To understand the game as a whole, for example how
many captains played this week, from our own records and never by
sharing them with an analytics company.
3. Who else receives it
We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't
share it with advertisers. It goes outside the game only to:
- Our hosting provider, whose servers store the game's
database.
- Stripe, our payment processor, when you buy something.
It receives your payment details, your email address and what you bought,
and handles them under its own privacy policy (stripe.com/privacy).
- Adobe Fonts, which serves the game's lettering. When a
game screen loads, your browser fetches the font from Adobe, so Adobe
receives your IP address and browser details as part of that request.
Adobe says it doesn't use font requests to track you or set cookies.
- The authorities, if the law requires it, or to protect
someone's safety.
- A new owner, if the game is ever sold. The new owner
would have to follow this policy or tell you first.
Some of these providers may store or process information outside
Saskatchewan or Canada, including in the United States, where it is subject
to local law.
4. How long we keep it
- Your account (email, names, progress, activity) is
kept while your account exists, and deleted when you ask us to delete
it.
- Race fields are cleared from the server shortly after
each race ends, and finished battles are cleared when they expire.
- Chat messages are kept so the game can show recent
chat and so abuse can be dealt with. They are deleted with your account,
or sooner if we remove them.
- Purchase records are kept for as long as tax and
accounting law requires (in Canada, generally six years), even after the
rest of your account is deleted.
5. Keeping it safe
The game is served over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and your
sign-in key is a long random value that the server checks securely. Access
to the back office, where emails and IP addresses can be seen, is password
protected and limited to us. No system is perfectly secure, though, and
since there is no password, anyone using your browser can play as
you. Keep your device locked.
6. Your choices and rights
You can ask us to:
- show you what we hold about you;
- correct something that's wrong, such as your email
address;
- delete your account and the information tied to it
(apart from purchase records the law requires us to keep);
- stop using your information for something you've
agreed to.
Email brandom.designer@gmail.com from the address on your
account, with your captain name, and we'll reply within 30 days. Deleting
your account removes your captain, progress and anything bought with it,
and can't be undone.
If you aren't satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office
of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca). If you live elsewhere,
you may also have rights under your local law, and we'll respect them.
7. If you live in the UK or the EU
If you live in the United Kingdom, the European Union or the European
Economic Area, the UK GDPR or the EU General Data Protection Regulation
also applies to your information. This section adds what those laws ask us
to tell you.
Who is responsible
Empire of Golden Sails, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, is the
controller of your information. Contact

Why we are allowed to use it
| What we do | Legal basis |
| Running your account and the game, and delivering what you
buy |
Performing our contract with you (the Terms of Service) |
| Keeping the game fair and safe: spotting cheating, multiple
accounts, chat abuse and payment fraud, including using your IP
address |
Our legitimate interest in a fair, secure game |
| Understanding the game as a whole, from our own records |
Our legitimate interest in running and improving it |
| Keeping purchase records |
Legal obligation (tax and accounting law) |
| Any marketing email |
Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
Your rights
As well as the rights in section 6, you have the right to:
- a copy of your information in a common,
machine-readable format, to keep or move elsewhere (portability);
- object to our using your information for our
legitimate interests, and to have its use restricted
while a question about it is sorted out;
- withdraw consent you have given, without affecting
what we did before.
These are free to use. We reply within one month, and tell you if we
need longer for a complicated request.
Automatic decisions
We don't make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects
about you purely by automated means. The one thing the game does
automatically is pause purchases on an account while a payment dispute
(chargeback) on it is open. If that happens, contact us and a person will
look at it.
Transfers outside the UK and EU
The game's server is in Canada. The UK and the EU recognise Canada as
giving adequate protection to personal information handled by businesses
under PIPEDA. Stripe and Adobe may process information in the United States
and other countries, under the safeguards set out in their own privacy
policies (such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual
clauses).
Complaints
Please contact us first. You can also complain to the Information
Commissioner's Office in the UK (ico.org.uk), or to the data protection
authority in your EU country.
Young players
Some countries set a higher age than 13 for agreeing to online services
yourself (up to 16 in parts of the EU). If that applies where you live, you
need a parent or guardian's permission before you make a captain.
8. Children
The game isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly
collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has made a
captain, tell us and we'll delete it. Players under the age of majority
need a parent or guardian's permission to play and to buy anything.
9. Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we'll update this page
and its date. If the change matters, we'll tell you in the game before it
takes effect.
